A witty, spooky and fabulously atmospheric comedy-thriller, The Phantom Light was an early feature from British film legend Michael Powell. With leading roles for the multi-talented Binnie Hale and endlessly popular character player Gordon Harker, this classic Gainsborough feature is presented here in a transfer from original film elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. Standing on a lonely stretch of the Welsh coast, the North Stack Lighthouse has an unhappy notoriety: its light sometimes fails and more than one ship has been wrecked on the treacherous coastline. When new keeper Sam Higgins arrives, he scoffs at the locals' tales of a 'haunted' light – until he finds out that a former keeper was murdered and another driven insane... After the Thin Man combines crime, kisses, and cocktails in the second Thin Man adventure! Here is the classic Lux Radio Theater performance of the 1936 movie hit After the Thin Man, recreated in 1940 as a 60-minute radio adaptation with the original film stars! This Audio Archive presentation features William Powell and Myrna Loy, who reprise their original roles as newly retired detective Nick Charles and his beautiful (and wealthy) bride, Nora. The newlyweds take the Sunset Limited train from New York back to San Francisco, just in time for New Year's Eve...and just in time for a murder among Nora's very own Nob Hill family. Nick continues insisting that he's out of the "detective racket". But one murder leads to another, and soon the two tipsy sleuths are up to their Nob-by knees in mahem and mystery. William Powell was a three-time Academy Award-nominated American actor, noted for his sophisticated, cynical film roles. Myrna Loy was a big box-office draw, and in 1936 was named Queen of the Movies (with Clark Gable as the King) in a nationwide poll of movie goers. 1. Language: English. Colin Powell is the embodiment of the American dream. He was born in Harlem to immigrant parents from Jamaica. He knew the rough life of the streets. He overcame a barely average start at school. Then he joined the Army. The rest is history - including Vietnam, the Pentagon, Panama, and Desert Storm - but a history that until now has been known only on the surface. Here, for the first time, Colin Powell himself tells us how it happened, in a memoir distinguished by a heartfelt love of country and family, warm good humor, and a soldier's directness. My American Journey is the powerful story of a life well lived and well told. It is also a view from the mountaintop of the political landscape of America. At a time when Americans feel disenchanted with their leaders, General Powell's passionate views on family, personal responsibility, and, in his own words, "the greatness of America and the opportunities it offers" inspire hope and present a blueprint for the future. An utterly absorbing account, it is history with a vision. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Powell. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/rand/000916/bk_rand_000916_sample.mp3. Louis Armstrong has been called the most important improviser in the history of jazz. Although his New Orleans neighborhood was poor in nearly everything else, it was rich in superb music. Young Louis took it all in, especially the cornet blowing of Joe King Oliver. But after a run in with the police, 11-year-old Louis was sent away to the Colored Waif's Home for Boys, where he became a disciplined musician in the school's revered marching band. By the time he returned to his neighborhood, the King himself became his mentor and invited Armstrong to play with him in Chicago. Here is a joyful tribute to the virtuoso musician and buoyant personality who introduced much of the world to jazz. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Arnell Powell. Brand-new stories by: Dennis Lehane, Stewart O'Nan, Patricia Powell, John Dufresne, Lynne Heitman, Don Lee, Russ Aborn, Itabari Njeri, Jim Fusilli, Brendan DuBois, and Dana Cameron. Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, The Given Day) has proven himself to be a master of both crime fiction and literary fiction. Here, he extends his literary prowess to that of master curator. In keeping with the Akashic Noir series tradition, each story in Boston Noir is set in a different neighborhood of the city - the impressively diverse collection extends from Roxbury to Cambridge, from Southie to the Boston Harbor, and all stops in between. Lehane's own contribution - the longest story in the volume - is set in his beloved home neighborhood of Dorchester and showcases his phenomenal ability to grip the heart, soul, and throat of the reader. In 2003, Lehane's novel Mystic River was adapted into film and quickly garnered six Academy Award nominations (with Sean Penn and Tim Robbins each winning Academy Awards). The complete list of narrators includes Karen White, Scott Aiello, Stephen Hoye, Jason Culp, Jeri Silverman, Suzanne Toren, Marc Vietor, Scott Brick, Joe Barrett, Carington MacDuffie, and Erin Moon. 1.
